Hopefully there will be someone who can connect to my SWOPE/SCHWAB lineage. The funny thing is in my own local genealogical society (EWGS - Spokane, WA) I have three cousins on this line. So there has to be many more out there.

Jost SCHWAB b.ca1656 was the s/o Georg SCHWAB b.ca 1610 and Margaretha ZIMMERMAN (m.ca 1630). Georg d. between 1681-1689 and Margaretha d. 27 Mar 1695 both in Sinsheim, Baden, GERMANY.

These family names go into the BURCKHARDT, RENZ, STREBEL, & HAAGI names.

Closer to home - the son of Jost SCHWAB was Joseph b. 1707 in Sinsheim and he migrated to America. WHEN? I do not have the name of the wife he married ca 1730 but he died ca 1756-57 while traveling from VA. The "tradition" says he was riding to check up on his property in Lancaster Co., PA and was thrown by his horse and died as result of this accident.
Sounds good - huh? That could certainly happen - but?

At any rate, I know Joseph had son Joseph b.11 Aug 1751 Augusta Co.,VA who m. a young Irish woman, Katherine SULLIVAN on 3 Apr 1774. They settled in Monroe Co., (W)VA and Joseph d. 2 Mar 1819, with burial in the WolfCreek Baptist Church Cemetery there.

I can go on and on but hope to have some dialog on this family.

  1. Well I am one of the EWGS members that is related to this Swope line, so hopefully Bette will find our line back in Germany.

  2. On one of my Salt Lake research trips, I found a book by Winifred Maclachen, who took the family back into Germany. I evidently loaned out that book as I don't see it on my shelf. Why don't people return books and why didn't I jot that person's name down at the time?

I want to share a Bible record however.
    Swope Family Bible held by J.G.Alderson, 1915 - Family Record pg.1 col. 1 -

Joseph Swope Senr of Monroe County was born the 11th day of August AD 1757
Catherine his wife was born February 9th 1756 Died March 12th 1820
The above pair were married April 3rd, 1774
George their son was born 15 Oct 1776
Margaret their daughter was born 20th October AD 1777
Ruth their daughter born December 27th AD 1778
Joseph their son born 20th day June AD 1781
Jonathon their son born 20th Jan 1784
Catharine their daughter born 12th February 1786

    Maybe this will help someone.

  3. Well it is kind of like posting a query in a periodical, takes a while sometimes. I posted the tombstone of my great grandfather Orville Travis, and almost a year later one of my cousins found it.

  4. Guess what? I FOUND the SWOPE family history that was missing. I happened to look up at another top shelf while thoughts ran through my head. AND there is THE BOOK!.

Now as soon as I can get my husband, John, to get it down for me, I will see what else I can use for this blog.

  5. Thanks to our FamilyFinder DNA match, your little group of Swope cousins has grown to five. Thought I'd share a few tidbits I've read over the years about Catherine Sullivan, wife of Joseph Swope:

"Known as a doctor for the early settlers, though untrained, and a fierce hunter. It's said she once treed four panthers & killed three of them." I presume this didn't happen all at once. (smile)

    And then this one:

An Irish toast to Catherine Sullivan

    Here's to Catherine Sullivan
She never was a dainty one
She met 4 panthers; didn't run
But shot 3 with her trusty gun.

Now that my internet is back up (maybe), I'll be in touch via email.
